‘With the current regulations, you don’t brake at the last moment because we’re now using a braking point of 100 meters, which is the last moment to brake. So now you lift off the gas 20-30 meters before and just coast through the corners. This is to conserve as much energy as possible, because you need that energy for the straight. And top drivers like Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Piastri or Alonso, they derived their performance from the braking point, the speed leading up to the apex, and of course, the acceleration out of the corner. And now, if you just coast through the corner, they no longer have that advantage. That’s why they’re not exactly thrilled about the rules right now.’

Ayao Komatsu: ‘Looking back, we had a couple of difficult races in May – but it’s given us plenty to analyze and improve on, both technically and operationally, and we take that and look ahead eager to get back racing on a regular basis now.’
‘We were missing some pace’ – Mini says he and MP can still improve despite championship lead (Formula 2)
‘It’s very early in the championship, so we need to focus on the job, and find some more pace. We got a double podium in Canada, but we were missing some pace, clearly. So we still need to work a bit and try to extend.’
Kimi receives prestigious Bandini Trophy (Mercedes)
‘The day’s celebrations began with Kimi travelling to Imola, where he met local authorities before greeting the crowd through the city centre in his father’s GT3 car. The programme then continued in Faenza, where he greeted fans in Piazza del Popolo and met with the city’s Mayor. From there, the Italian driver travelled on to Brisighella, Lorenzo Bandini’s hometown, where he received a warm welcome from the public in Piazza Carducci and was formally presented with the 33rd Trofeo Bandini in Piazza Marconi, following speeches from local dignitaries and event representatives. The festivities concluded with an official dinner.’

Born today in 1956: Jan Lammers, who won the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hours for Jaguar with team mates Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace. He also raced in Formula 1 and set a record for the longest-ever gap between consecutive starts: over 10 years passed between his appearances for Theodore in 1982 and March in 1992
35 years ago today Michael Andretti led a one-two-three for the Andretti family in the Milwaukee 200. His cousin John Andretti came in second ahead of Michael’s father Mario.
35 years ago today Nelson Piquet scored his final F1 victory in the Canadian Grand Prix after race leader Nigel Mansell’s Williams stopped halfway around the final lap at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Stefano Modena was promoted to second place for Tyrrell ahead of Riccardo Patrese, while Mansell was classified sixth, taking the final point
