Monsoon tracker highlights: Heatwave alert for seven districts, thunderstorm forecast in 10 districts for tomorrow in Telangana

With monsoon showers exposing Bengaluru’s perennial road and drainage problems, Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao today said officials have been directed to deploy pothole-filling machines and ensure roads across the city are made pothole-free at the earliest. 

Speaking to reporters after reviewing white-topping and buffer road projects, Mr. Rao said the highest number of complaints received so far relate to waterlogging. He said GBA has identified and inspected major stormwater drains along nearly 1,500 kms of arterial roads and completed around 70% of desilting works to prevent flooding.

A powerful dust storm swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) today afternoon, reducing visibility in several areas and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for thunderstorms and rain. 

Wind speeds touched 92 kmph at the Palam weather station around 2.30 p.m. while gusts of 70-90 kmph were recorded in several other parts of the Capital.

Public transport services were disrupted across the city, with the Delhi metro announcing delays at some stations.

With the monsoon gathering strength, senior officials from HYDRAA, Hyderabad Traffic Police, Law and Order police and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) fanned out across some of the city’s waterlogging locations on June 15 to assess preparedness and prevent a repeat of rain-induced traffic chaos.

The joint inspection, led by HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, focused on vulnerable stretches in Rajendranagar and Shamshabad, including the Ramdev Baba junction and areas near Pillars 265 and 191 of the PVNR Expressway, locations that frequently witness flooding and severe traffic congestion during heavy downpours.

Accompanied by Joint Commissioner of Traffic D. Joel Davis, DCP Traffic-III Rahul Hegde, DCP Shamshabad Zone B. Rajesh and GHMC Rajendranagar Zonal Commissioner Srinivasa Reddy, the team reviewed drainage infrastructure, stormwater discharge capacity and rainwater flow channels at the identified hotspots.

With less than average rainfall being registered till May end, sowing for the kharif season has been hit in Yadgir district where just 20.87% sowing (83,862 hectares) has been registered against the target of 4.01 lakh hectares.

According to data provided by the concerned government department, Yadgir district received pre Monssoon rainfall of 60.3 mm of normal rainfall against the actual rainfall of 100.9 mm from March 1 to May 31.

The normal rainfall between June 1 and 15 was 45 mm against the actual rainfall of 60. 7. The shortage in this period has prompted farmers to wait for good spells.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner M. Ramesh reviewed the preparedness of the police department to handle monsoon-related challenges today, including waterlogging, traffic congestion and tree falls, during a virtual meeting with Traffic and Law and Order officials.

The Commissioner assessed the status of waterlogging points across various police station limits and directed officials to take preventive measures in vulnerable areas. He instructed officers to coordinate closely with concerned departments to ensure that issues arising during heavy rainfall are addressed without delay.

The Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGNPDCL) has rolled out a tech-driven action plan ‘HYPER’ utilising real-time weather updates, to ensure restoration of electricity supply on a war-footing during heavy rains and gales/heavy winds, as part of its proactive move to tackle monsoon-related power supply disruptions.

Acknowledging that the power sector faces severe vulnerability during the monsoon, the CMD stated that TGNPDCL has fortified its infrastructure and adopted the ‘HYPER’ framework combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is designed to minimise power downtime and would serve consumers swiftly.

In view of the challenges posed by monsoon, coupled with the geography of Abujhmad, Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur administration has initiated advance storage of food grains in Public Distribution System (PDS) outlets and gram panchayats for ensuring smooth supply in remote areas.

With the onset of the monsoon, the paths leading to many villages get blocked due to raging streams and rivers, making both the transport of food grains and the movement of people extremely difficult.

To deal with the situation, the district administration has initiated the advance storage of three months’ worth of food grains in all Gram Panchayats and PDS outlets.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed the officials to remain on high alert during the entire monsoon season.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the Chief Minister yesterday emphasised that robust measures should be taken to ensure the public faces no inconvenience. The CM warned of strict action against the officials if they neglect their responsibilities during the crisis time.

The Chief Minister inquired about the situation during heavy rains in the Core Urban Region (CURE) on June 9 and expressed displeasure over the inconvenience faced by city residents due to traffic jams in several areas, including Cyberabad.

The CM was serious about the Municipal, Police, and Traffic wings for their failure in alerting people despite warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm forecast in 14 Telangana districts for today.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied with gusty winds are very likely to occur at isolated places in Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri and Rangareddy districts.

Thunderstorm forecast in 14 Telangana districts today

Thunderstorms with gusty winds expected in 14 Telangana districts on June 15, warns the India Meteorological Department.

The monsoon has not moved from Harne in Konkan and Solapur in Madhya Maharashtra for five days. The Meteorological Department forecast a change in this situation after June 18, with the monsoon expected to become active in parts of the State between June 18 and July 2.

According to a document from the Meteorological Department, the monsoon entered lower Konkan on June 6 and reached Harne and Solapur within a short period. Predictions of a rapid advance across the state followed. However, the progress has since been delayed. Officials attribute this to a change in weather conditions and winds from the north that carry heat and lack moisture. These factors have affected the monsoon winds.

Maharashtra’s monsoon is expected to advance after June 18, bringing relief from heat, says the Meteorological Department.

The monsoon activity in Andhra Pradesh has remained subdued thus far, with 17 out of the 28 districts reporting deficient rainfall between June 1 and June 14. The Southwest Monsoon arrived in the State on June 6 and is expected to cover the remaining parts of the State in the next three days. However, many districts continue to experience intense heat due to the active El Nino conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) – Amaravati has forecast light showers in isolated areas (one or two places) in three regions of South Coastal A.P. (SCAP) and Rayalaseema for the next week. A few areas in the North Coastal A.P. region may also receive light showers. However, thunderstorm activity is expected to continue across the State this week.
