Nepal flash floods LIVE: Death toll goes past 900; over 4,000 still missing

At ‌least 590 foreign nationals from ⁠39 countries are ‌missing in ‌Nepal ‌after ⁠the devastating ⁠flood that struck the Himalayan ‌nation last week, the Nepali ‌Foreign Ministry said on Monday (August 31, 2026).

So ⁠far, 323 ‌foreign nationals have been rescued, spokesperson ‌Lok Bahadur Chhetri said.

Families of three people from Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, including a woman and her son, have appealed to the Centre for help in tracing them after they went missing in the aftermath of the floods in Nepal.

Priyanka, a resident of Beur village in the Bansdih tehsil area, has sought help from the government to locate her husband Govind Kumar Bharti, who has been missing in Nepal since the tragedy.

Priyanka said on Monday (August 31, 2026) that she married Govind only four months ago and last spoke to him on August 26. He had promised to return home on September 15.

Govind had gone to Nepal for work about a month after their marriage, she said.

As many as 262 people from Maharashtra remain stranded in flood-hit regions of Nepal and China as of Monday (August 31, 2026) morning, while 144 others have been safely evacuated to India, according to an official State government report.

The Maharashtra Disaster Management Department confirmed that efforts are underway with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to trace 64 individuals still unreachable.

The authorities were yet to establish direct contact with 60 citizens who had travelled through Richa Tours Pvt Ltd, while information about four others had been received through links but contact with them could not yet be made, it said.

According to the report, 144 citizens had reached India so far, and of these, 105 reached Nagpur on August 28, while 39 arrived in Mumbai on Saturday (August 29, 2026) and Sunday (August 30, 2026).

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said that about 13 people from the State were yet to be traced following the flash floods.

He said the State government was in constant contact with the Ministry of External Affairs and central government authorities on the matter.

“About 13 people are yet to be traced. Our officials are in touch with the MEA and the central government. We have sent our representatives to establish contact. We have not been able to trace one group; the rest have all been traced,” Mr. Shivakumar said.

He said he had travelled to New Delhi on Sunday (August 30, 2026) night for personal work and discussed the matter with officials there. “I have spoken to some of those who are stranded,” he said.

Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang flagged off the ‘Sikkim for Nepal’ relief mission, sending a team of around 35 members to flood and landslide-hit areas of the Himalayan country with essential supplies and medical assistance.

In a post on X, he said, “In a humble endeavour to extend a helping hand and convey our heartfelt solidarity with Nepal and its people, Sikkim has come forward to provide essential relief materials and medical assistance to those affected by this tragedy.”

The mission, organised by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), will carry medicines, food and other essential relief materials, besides providing medical and rescue assistance to affected communities.

The team comprises medical personnel, rescue workers and volunteers who have been mobilised to assist people in areas hit by the devastating floods and landslides.

Mr. Tamang said he had flagged off the dedicated SKM team under the banner of ‘Sikkim for Nepal’, describing the initiative as a reflection of the “spirit of compassion, humanity and brotherhood” shared by the people of the region.

“In times of adversity, we must stand united and extend a helping hand to those in need,” the CM said.

He also expressed solidarity with families who lost their loved ones and those affected by the disaster, saying Sikkim’s prayers and thoughts were with the people of Nepal as they began the difficult task of recovery and rebuilding.

The Tamil Nadu government has set up a three-member nodal team in Kathmandu to coordinate rescue operations and assist relatives of Tamil tourists stranded or missing in flood-hit Nepal.

According to an official statement issued by the Tamil Nadu government, several tourists from the State were affected by the floods during their visit to Nepal, with some reported missing and others stranded in affected areas.

The State government said all possible assistance was being extended on the instructions of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.

Three Indian nationals were among four people rescued by the Nepali Army from Chilime village in flood-hit Rasuwa district, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava said today.

The development comes as India continues to assist Nepal in rescue and relief operations following the devastating flash floods that swept through northern and central parts of the country on August 26.

“Met 3 Indian nationals and their Nepali colleague, who were rescued by Nepali Army from Chilime village, that was badly affected by flash floods in #Rasuwa. We thank the Nepali army for their help.” Srivastava said in a post on X.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is facilitating their return to India, he said.

Four unidentified bodies recovered from the Narayani-Gandak river in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district were handed over to the Nepal administration after post-mortem examinations, officials said on Monday (August 31, 2026).

The bodies of three women and a man were recovered on August 27 from the river and had been kept at the district hospital mortuary as their identities could not be established.

DNA samples were collected from all four bodies during the post-mortem examination to facilitate their identification, officials said.

Nichlaul Tehsildar Amit Singh, who led the operation, said, “the bodies were transported in two ambulances and handed over to the Nawalparasi administration at the Maheshpur border near Thuthibari late Sunday night.” Additional District Magistrate Prashant Kumar said, “all necessary legal and administrative formalities were completed before the bodies were handed over to Nepal Police.”

The DNA data will also be shared with the Nepal administration according to procedure to help match the samples with those of families searching for missing persons, officials said.

China provided $2.2 million in financial assistance to Nepal for victims of the devastating flash flood, with President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang expressing condolences over the loss of lives and property, the government said on Monday.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming handed over a cheque for NPR 350 million, equivalent to $2 million, to Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle on Sunday as assistance from the Chinese government, the Finance Ministry said.

The Chinese envoy also handed over $200,000 in assistance from the Chinese Red Cross to the Nepal government, it said.

The devastating flash floods in the Himalayan region swept so many people downstream that authorities in one Nepalese district have begun burying bodies in temporary graves before they can be identified, prompting accusations that Hindu funeral traditions are being ignored.

In south-central Nepal’s Chitwan district, the scale of the catastrophe was evident in some 250 bodies awaiting identification and the hastily dug trenches for their temporary burial following Wednesday’s catastrophic floods and mudslides.

The bodies were carried hundreds of kilometers downstream by the Bhotekoshi River from the flood’s epicentre before being recovered in Chitwan.

Authorities carried out a temporary burial of about 100 victims on Saturday, officials said, as forensic teams struggled to cope. A convoy of vehicles carrying bodies entered a lush, forested area as an excavator dug a wide trench in the red earth while officials and media looked on.

Four days after the flood in Nepal, the death toll in the disaster reached 788, and 2,502 people remained missing even as the preservation of recovered bodies became a challenge for the authorities, who continued with the rescue efforts.

Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai said Nepal urgently required freezer units and DNA-testing kits, warning that the bodies must be preserved and identified quickly to prevent decomposition and contain public-health risks. He said the government is “putting all our resources at disposal in relief and rescue operations.”
