Gasly “proud” of FIA after penalties rescinded: “It’s a massive step forward for our sport” | Formula 1

Pierre Gasly says he is proud of Formula 1 and the FIA after Alpine succeeded in their bid to overturn his Monaco Grand Prix penalties.

The Monaco Grand Prix stewards confirmed today they had rescinded Gasly’s two five-second time penalties for exceeding the pit lane speed limit during the race. They found the length of the pit lane had been measured incorrectly by the official timekeepers.

Gasly was one of five drivers who received pit lane speeding penalties during the race. The cancellation of his penalties raises him from seventh place to third in the final classification.

“It sounds really good,” Gasly told Sky. “I must say I’m extremely happy for the whole team, very proud of the way they have fought for all of us for that result.”

Gasly knew when he finished the race he had two penalties to serve and was therefore unlikely to keep his podium finish. Although he celebrated his “P3” finish on the radio and waved to the crowd on his in-lap, he admitted he “felt very low” on Sunday night after the race.

“I had a lot of mixed emotions. I was proud of the performance, extremely sad about the whole decision, the whole situation, some injustice in all that situation. And I wasn’t sure how things would move forward.

“But the team did an amazing job. I must say I’m very proud of F1, the FIA, for the transparency and everybody recognising their responsibilities in that situation. We all know that with everything at stake, when you look at world championships in all different sports, you know how complicated things can be. Today, it’s a massive step forward for our sport.”

However, it remains to be seen whether Gasly will keep his third place. His promotion to third place came at the expense of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri – the latter among those who served a five-second time penalty for pit lane speeding during the race – and both teams have indicated they intend to appeal the stewards’ decision to overturn Gasly’s penalties. Mercedes, whose driver George Russell was also penalised, are also considering their legal options.
