Although the governing body did not specify what the abuse related to, it received several hateful and abusive comments in relation to penalties issued to Franco Colapinto for failing to respond correctly to yellow flags. Two other drivers, Arvid Lindblad, and Liam Lawson, received the same penalties.

“Following the Dutch Grand Prix, FIA stewards were targeted with online abuse after applying sporting penalties in line with FIA regulations,” said the FIA in a statement.

“The United Against Online Abuse coalition condemns all forms of abuse and harassment. disagreement with decisions is part of sport, but it must never justify threats or personal attacks.

“In 2023, the FIA launched the United Against Online Abuse coalition after a steward faced targeted abuse following the United States Grand Prix.

“We urge everyone engaging with our sport to do so with respect and responsibility, online and offline.”

In addition to his penalty at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, Colapinto has been penalised three times this year for failing to respond correctly to yellow flags.

Colapinto and Alpine executive officer Flavio Briatore criticised his penalty for overtaking Yuki Tsunoda under double waved yellow flags as the Racing Bulls driver approached Max Verstappen’s crashed car:
