Michael Schumacher had already electrified the Formula 1 paddock at Spa-Francorchamps by putting Bertrand Gachot’s Jordan seventh on the grid. Unfortunately his clutch died as he pulled away from the grid, ending his race on the first lap.
The Jordans were quick at Spa – Schumacher’s team mate Andrea de Cesaris was closing on race leader Ayrton Senna until his Ford-Cosworth engine let him down. That left championship leader Senna to collect a valuable 10 points after title rival Nigel Mansell retired.
