By In a first of its kind in south Tamil Nadu, KGS Scans has launched a new digital PET imaging system, which would facilitate reduced radiotracer requirement and better image quality, said consultant radiologist K. G. Srinivasan on Saturday.
In a press release, he said that the recent initiative was a combination of fusion imaging with PETCT and PETMRI compatibility, with advanced nuclear medicine studies including FDG PET (FluoroDeoxyGlucose Positron Emission Tomography) amongst others, which would benefit the public.
The most commonly used, versatile isotope, 18FDG – an indispensable part of oncology, helps evaluate, diagnose and follow up malignancies. FAPI PET, a special isotope that does a lot of heavy lifting – can be used to identify specific ‘silent’ tumours which do not show significant uptake on the commonly used FDG PET. DOPA PET, using 18F DOPA, uses ground breaking technology to identify dopamine deficient areas in the brain parenchyma significantly earlier than on MRI in Parkinson’s disease.
He further said that PSMA PET (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen) helps identify prostate cancer (one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in elderly men worldwide), with added theranostic benefits.
Explaining the features of fusion imaging, he said it could be used in conjunction with existing modalities to enhance the diagnostic possibilities. MRI provides significant anatomical detail.
In simple terms, it shows a structure as it is. This is where PET comes in – because a radioisotope addresses the functional component.
The KGS Scans, which has been functioning in Madurai for over two decades, has been providing state-of-the-art services, with the primary objective of affordable, accessible imaging without compromising on quality or precision. The new facility implements the latest technology available, and the time saved in arriving at a diagnosis could truly make a meaningful difference for the affected individual, Dr Srinivasan said in the release.
