IndyCar held the first test for its new 2028 chassis at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday.

Alexander Rossi had the honour of completing the first laps in the IR-28, which is due to replaced the current DW12 after next season. It will be the series’ first all-new chassis since the 2012 season.
The new chassis, designed again by Dallara, is expected to weigh around 45 kilograms less than the current design. It also features new bodywork behind the front wheels which has been designed to reduce turbulence and allow cars to follow each other more closely.
Rossi was impressed by his first experience of the new machine, calling it “a joy to drive.”
“First of all, before you even drive it, when you sit in it, the cockpit ergonomics and design is substantially better,” he said. “It’s a car where you don’t feel as many vibrations, so you can tell the build quality is quite high.
“For pure balance and performance, it’s still hard to say, because we’re just super-early days right now. All in all, it’s been incredibly smooth, and it’s a joy to drive so far.”
Alex Palou is due to take over testing duties in the car today.
