Teenager dies after 'medical episode' at Kendal Calling festival in Cumbria

A teenage girl died at the Kendal Calling festival in the early hours of the morning, police have said.

The 17-year-old suffered a medical episode at about 02:15 BST and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cumbria Police. The force asked people not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.

It added officers were looking into the circumstances and wanted to speak to anyone who was in the area of the Calling Out tent and the Big Wheel around the time of the girl’s death.

A spokesperson said: “Officers are particularly keen to speak with a group of women who alerted first responders to the girl after becoming concerned for her welfare.”

They said the girl’s family had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

The force asked people not to speculate, saying it could have a “significant impact” on the family and friends involved.

“We would ask that the investigation be allowed to take its course.”

A Kendal Calling spokesperson said the festival team was supporting authorities with their investigation.

They said: “As soon as the individual became unwell, they were immediately attended to by our on-site security and medical teams.

“Paramedics and medical personnel provided emergency care at the scene and did everything they could to help.”

The spokesperson added the team was “deeply saddened” by the teenager’s death and extended “deepest sympathy” to her loved ones.

Kendal Calling is running for its 21st year and grew from a small festival with a capacity of 900 people to about 40,000 attending last year.

It takes place at Lowther Deer Park, near Penrith, and live acts perform across 13 stages.

Headliners at this year event include Biffy Clyro, Wolf Alice, Two Door Cinema Club and The Kooks.
