Minister for Minorities Welfare A. M. Shahjahan on Saturday chaired a review meeting in Tirunelveli to assess the progress of various welfare schemes being implemented by the Minorities Welfare Department in the district.
Addressing the meeting, he said the Tamil Nadu government has been implementing several schemes, aimed at promoting the economic and educational development of people belonging to minority communities. Mentioning that ₹34 crore had been allocated for the construction of compound walls and provision of basic amenities and road facilities at the Christian and Muslim cemeteries, he added that based on the demands of Christians and Muslims, appropriate funds were being allocated for the work of improving basic amenities at places of worship and cemeteries.
Highlighting the welfare measures extended to minorities, the Minister said low-interest loans up to ₹20 lakh were being provided to eligible beneficiaries to support their business activities and minority section students pursuing higher education abroad were being provided with financial assistance up to ₹36 lakh.
He directed the officials to take necessary action to create awareness among the public about the registration in welfare boards and other government schemes. He instructed officials to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive the assistance provided by the government.
Following the meeting, the Minister distributed welfare assistance worth ₹40.19 lakh to 141 beneficiaries. He also handed over ₹13.2 lakh for the construction of a compound wall of a Christian cemetery.
He further inspected the Quaid-E-Millet knowledge world being constructed at a cost ₹98 crore in Palayamkottai.
Tirunelveli District Collector Anand Mohan, MP Robert, MLA R. S. Murugan and other officials were present at the meeting.
