On This Day: Schumacher clinches fourth world championship in Hungary | Brief

Michael Schumacher, Ferrari, Hungaroring, 2001

On this day 25 years ago Michael Schumacher won the world championship for the fourth time.

The Ferrari driver’s victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix was his seventh of the season. With four rounds left it gave him an unassailable 43-point lead over David Coulthard (a win was worth 10 points at the time).

At the time Schumacher was only the third driver to win four titles, joining Juan Manuel Fangio and Alain Prost. Since then three more have joined them: Sebastian Vettel in 2013, Lewis Hamilton in 2017 and Max Verstappen in 2024. Like Schumacher, Hamilton also went on to win three further world championships.
