On this day 40 years ago Mike Thackwell and Henri Pescarolo shared victory for Sauber-Mercedes in a farcical Nurburgring 1000 kilometres.
The World Sportscar Championship race was red-flagged after a huge crash behind the Safety Car in heavy rain which eliminated both of the factory Porsche entries, shared by Hans Stuck and Derek Bell, and Jochen Mass (pictured) and Bob Wollek.
Porsche’s Brun, Joest and Kremer customer teams withdrew in protest over the dire conditions.
