The Ukrainian Automobile Federation is reportedly appealing against the FIA’s decision to reverse its ban on Russians competing in motorsport and displaying their flag at its events.

The federation is bringing an appeal to the FIA Court of Appeal over the U-turn.
The FIA’s decision came into effect on August 3rd, though the governing body did not announce it for another 10 days. The federation formally objected to the decision three days later and subsequently requested the FIA’s ethics committee.
The governing body originally announced the ban, which also applies to Belarussia, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The war continues and the FIA’s announcement of its decision did not give any reasons for its change.
Until 2022, Russian racer Nikita Mazepin competed in Formula 1 and his father’s company sponsored Haas, which ran in Russian colours. F1 also held a race in Russia, at Sochi Autodrom, from 2014 to 2021. F1 cancelled its contract in response to the invasion and the FIA has not relaxed its ban on events taking place in Russia or Belarussia.
In 2023, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said he had opposed taking action against Russia over the war. The BBC reported Ben Sulayem proposed relaxing the ban on Russian participation in motorsport, and stated the FIA said its decision followed a similar announcement by the International Olympic Committee in July.
The Ukrainian Automobile Federation is challenging the FIA’s decision as it claims the Russian Automobile Federation is operating offices in parts of Ukraine which Russia has invaded, in Sevastopol, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. The federation’s website prominently displays names of its members who have been killed in the war since it began.
